The town of Palmetto lies southeast of St. Petersburg on the right bank of the Manatee River just east of its confluence with Mullet Key Bayou and Tampa Bay on the Gulf of Mexico. Interstate highways 75 and 275 connect it to points north, south and west including the cities of St. Petersburg and Tampa to the north and Sarasota and Cape Coral to the south. Tampa International Airport is about 41 miles north. The area is renowned for its white sand beaches and water activities ranging from surfing and fishing to sunbathing and boating.

History of Palmetto

Hernando de Soto landed at Tampa Bay in 1539, the earliest known European to enter the area. His explorations set the stage for later settlements throughout Florida and the southeastern United States.

The city of Palmetto attributes its founding to Samuel Lamb, who came to the area in 1868 from Mississippi with his family. The Manatee River, pristine Gulf beaches, natural vegetation and fertile soil were attractive to settlers. The Lambs built a house on land acquired from Juliann (Madam Joe) Atzeroth, who ran a general store in a log cabin next to the main house. Lamb laid out the streets for the town, with particular attention to a grand main street with a wide avenue running from the river to the bay. A post office was established in 1873. The city was incorporated in 1889. The building of the railroad through the area in 1895 expanded both commerce and communication.

Today, the town is home to about 13, 000 people. The Palmetto Historic District encompasses the original main street and downtown area and includes 208 buildings built between 1875 and 1949 that qualify for historic designation. The district includes a Carnegie Library, homes of early residents, a cemetery with those who died of yellow fever and several businesses.
