3 Cold and Flu Symptoms That Could Be Caused by Poor IAQ

Residents of Sarasota, Florida, who are not feeling well may attribute some of the symptoms they are feeling to a cold or flu bug. However, what they may not realize is that it may be their indoor air quality (IAQ) that’s causing the symptoms. Here are three ways your body may be telling you that there’s an issue with your home’s air quality.

Itchy Eyes

Itchy, dry eyes that have you reaching for your eye drops and allergy medicine may not be caused by pollen outside of your home. Your eyes may be reacting to pollutants that are circulating inside of your home, making them dry out and feel like they’re burning.

A Runny Nose

One of the first signs of a cold or flu is having to deal with a runny nose. It can be seriously annoying having to blow your nose often, and it can make the skin on your nose hurt to the point where you don’t ever want to see another tissue again. This symptom doesn’t necessarily mean that you have a cold coming on, though, as indoor air pollution can also cause the sniffles.

Coughing and Congestion

The coughing and congestion you feel in your nose and chest can make you want to run to the store for cold and flu medicine. It’s possible that these symptoms are another sign that you’re dealing with poor IAQ. Pollutants and biological growth could be contributing to these conditions.

Improving Your IAQ

There are some ways that you can improve your IAQ to help eliminate, or at least alleviate, these symptoms. One of the simplest things that can enhance your home’s air quality is changing your HVAC system’s filters and having your system cleaned. Your vents can have dust and debris built up in them that are just being blown around inside your home. Another option is to install an air purifier with HEPA filters.
