Longboat Key, FL

Longboat Key FL Air Conditioning Repair & Service

History

Thanks to its position on the western coast of Florida, Longboat Key has long been a favored staging ground. For thousands of years prior to the arrival of European settlers, local natives fished and hunted in the bays, lagoons and estuaries that surround the island. It’s likely that famed explorer Hernando de Soto was the first European to arrive here, and subsequent expeditions led to the creation of accurate maps of the Florida coast. However, the area wasn’t permanently settled until the early 1890s. As the region’s reputation grew, transportation connections with Northern cities improved dramatically. By the mid-1950s, Longboat Key had incorporated as a town and was well on its way to becoming a key snowbird destination. Today, it remains an affluent yet welcoming piece of Florida’s sparkling coastline.

Geography

Longboat Key is located near the southern extremity of the Tampa Bay area on the Florida Gulf Coast. As a barrier island, it’s separated from the mainland by a relatively deep channel. The incorporated town of Longboat Key is roughly contiguous with this piece of land, but certain outlying projections and sandbars aren’t included in the jurisdiction. The closest mainland cities of any size are Bradenton and Sarasota. The island is connected to these places by Florida Highway 789, the only state thoroughfare within its borders.

Population and Demographics

Although the figure fluctuates from year to year, Longboat Key has a year-round population of about 7,000. Many of these residents are snowbirds who have chosen to move into their second homes. Others are locals with deep roots in the area. Whereas the latter group tends to find employment in the tourism and service industries, the former tends to work on a part-time basis or enjoy well-deserved retirement. Longboat Key has a relatively low population of students and children. As such, the average age of residents is higher than that of the U.S. as a whole.

Things to Do in Longboat Key, Florida

Longboat Key has plenty of attractions. The southwestern shore of the island features a stunning white-sand beach that stretches for nearly its entire length and welcomes thousands of swimmers, sunbathers and joggers on nice days. The opposite coast has plenty of marshes that entice fishermen and bird-watchers. Nearby Sarasota Bay is a world-class fishing destination, and local boaters enjoy year-round access to the water. For golfers, Longboat Key Golf Club provides outdoor entertainment on the southern end of the island. Restaurants like the Lazy Lobster entice all manner of palettes.

Climate and Weather

With hot, humid summers and mild, slightly drier winters, Longboat Key has a subtropical climate that shares many characteristics with the tropical climate types found further south. During the transitional seasons, persistent onshore breezes bring relief from the heat but often spark powerful afternoon thunderstorms that include gusty winds and lightning. Summer is rainy as well, and the end of the season brings an increased threat of tropical storm activity. Local winters tend to be pleasant. Frozen precipitation is almost unknown here.
