Air Conditioner Replacement: 4 Key Installation Considerations

When you’re looking for an air conditioner replacement, choosing a system with a high seasonal energy efficiency ratio is a must. Did you know, though, that installation errors or oversights could actually lower the overall efficiency rating? By insisting that your contractor consider the following four factors, you’ll get the most value for your dollar.

Airflow

Improper airflow means that the desired temperature change across the evaporator coil cannot occur. Unfortunately, field studies have revealed that airflow through the evaporator is generally lower than the manufacturer’s recommendation of at least 400 cfm per ton. Request a copy of your contractor’s measurements to ensure that adequate airflow is being met.

Refrigerant charge

When your air conditioner’s refrigerant is overcharged or undercharged by as little as 20 percent, it could make a huge difference in the SEER rating. Be sure that your technician is working within the manufacturer’s specifications. In addition, have the refrigerant charge inspected — and corrected if necessary — during annual maintenance.

Tight ducts

Your ductwork is also an important aspect of your air conditioner’s performance. Leaky ducts can lower your indoor air quality by introducing contaminants into your air stream and greatly reduce your system’s efficiency.

Size

When you’re selecting an air conditioner replacement, you must understand that size matters. Selecting a system that’s too big for your home’s needs will cause it to cycle on and off frequently, thereby increasing energy consumption and keeping humidity levels uncomfortably high, a situation that’s ideal for the development of mold or mildew. A system that’s too small, on the other hand, will work too hard and likely fail prematurely. Make sure your new system is properly sized for your needs. Your installer should use the industry-accepted Manual J method.
